Julian Edelman explains what he likes about working with Cam Newton

Julian Edelman explains Cam Newton’s style of collaboration.

Until this year, Julian Edelman had really worked with just one starting quarterback: Tom Brady. His style of leadership is a succesful one, as shown by his six Super Bowls. But, of course, it’s not the only way to do it.

Since Cam Newton has arrived, he’s brought a different energy to the building. There is some clear overlap, with both quarterbacks being extremely vocal at practice and both quarterbacks being the first to clock in and the last to clock out during the work days. But Edelman seems to be identifying the differences in working with Newton.

“I think it’s an open forum with him,” Edelman said on WEEI on Friday morning. “‘Hey, what do you see here? What do you see there?’ I have played a lot of football in this league too, and he’s played a lot of football. It’s more of a team — ‘What do you see here? I think here is this, that.’ It’s pretty cool, I guess.”

The 34-year-old receiver, who Newton calls “Highway 11,” is likely a major resource for the newcomer. Edelman has plenty of experience in the offense, and will likely be the receiving leader on the team. Edelman’s rapport with Brady was famous — but it seems Edelman and Newton are getting along well.

“He just has a good energy about him,” Edelman told WEEI. “He’s very energetic and has a lot of energy to him. He makes it fun. He’s always in a pretty good mood from the time that he’s been here. I can’t speak on any other place or this that, but from what I have seen and what I have learned, he seems like a guy who loves football, has an energy about him and enjoys it. He enjoys football.”
