Julian Edelman discusses Hall of Fame, praise he received from Bill Belichick

The Hall of Fame conversation brought out some ugly comments toward the Super Bowl MVP.

Julian Edelman’s legacy in the NFL is tricky.

He’s clearly one of the most important New England Patriots players in franchise history, but the regular season numbers don’t quite put him alongside the greatest receivers. Edelman’s Super Bowl MVP, record-breaking playoff performances and grit with one of the top dynasties lead to a decent argument for the Pro Football Hall of Fame — from the opinion of some.

The 35-year-old announced his retirement this offseason and it brought out the discussions at a high volume. Edelman said he could go without these Hall of Fame conversations on Chris Long’s “Green light” podcast.

“A lot of it went to BS instantly, like all the Hall (of Fame) talk and stuff,” Edelman said, transcribed by WEEI. “There was a lot of hate on that and I had some cool dudes reach out and I will leave it between them. I am not going to name-drop, but you know what I mean. It was cool to have that and see the team and hear what Coach (Bill Belichick) said and what Mr. Kraft said.

“And being part of one organization my whole career and you know how it is there. You don’t necessarily get the compliments and to hear Bill say what he said at that level? that is kind of like if Bill gave you a compliment or a pat on the butt like during the week, it made your week.”

Belichick went above and beyond with his statement following Edelman’s retirement.

Edelman’s clearly stated before that he came into the league wanting Super Bowl wins, and wasn’t thinking about the Hall of Fame. Three rings later and he’s accomplished that goal.
