Josh Heupel provides update on wide receiver Jimmy Calloway following mesh play at Florida.

Tennessee (4-4, 2-3 SEC) has an open date in Week 9.

Josh Heupel met with media Wednesday and provided an update on sophomore wide receiver Jimmy Calloway and his playing time. Calloway started for the first time at Florida on Sept. 25 and has not played since.

At Florida, Tennessee featured mesh in a fourth-and-five situation on the Gators’ 30-yard line, down 24-14 with 6 minutes, 17 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

The mesh point between Calloway and Cedric Tillman was not closed or tight enough, allowing a defender to escape and cause a distraction behind the sophomore wide receiver. The result was not being able to complete Hendon Hooker’s passing attempt.

“I don’t think it’s just because of the drop,” Heupel said of Calloway’s playing time. “Continue to push and press, and when I say press, just urgency in your preparation. Everything that goes into it off the field, on the field.

“We have a great belief in Jimmy as a football player. Velus (Jones Jr.) sliding inside is a part of that reason, where those guys haven’t had as many opportunities. We believe in Jimmy, he continues to compete and I know he’s going to continue to get better every single week. I know it’s important to him.”

Jimmy Calloway’s 2021 stats

  • Sept. 11 vs. Pittsburgh: 3 receptions, 59 yards, 1 touchdown
  • Sept. 18 vs. Tennessee Tech: 1 reception, 22 yards
  • Sept. 25 at Florida: 1 reception, 3 yards
