Josh Heupel details Spencer Rattler being ‘a really good player’

Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel details South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler being a really good player.

Redshirt senior quarterback Spencer Rattler is in his second season at South Carolina.

The 6-foot-1, 217-pound signal-caller has completed 95-of-128 passing attempts for 1,242 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions in 2023.

Rattler completed 30-of-37 passing attempts for 438 yards, six touchdowns and zero interceptions in the Gamecocks’, 63-38, win versus Tennessee last season.

Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel discussed Rattler ahead of playing South Carolina on Saturday (7:30 p.m. EDT, SEC Network).

“He’s a really good player,” Heupel said. “He’s played at a high level. He’s played a lot of football. He’s playing extremely well right now. He was dynamic in that football game (last season), but he has that in his arsenal.

“For us, the line of scrimmage is important. We have to do a really good job, and we have to get them into third-and-long. Last year, we didn’t get off the field on third-and-longs. Some of that was coverage, some of that was him extending and making some really special plays. We have to do a great job of bottling him up and applying pressure at the same time.”
