UNC football wide receiver [autotag]Josh Downs[/autotag] is coming off a historic season in 2021 for the program and now he’s earning a lot of recognition ahead of the 2022 season.
Just a few days after he earned second-team All-American honors, Downs was named to the 2022 Maxwell Award preseason watch list. The receiver is one of over 50 players to crack the watch list as the award is given out annually to the College Player of the Year since 1937. It’s named after Robert “Tiny” Maxwell who was a former standout at Swarthmore College.
The Maxwell Award watch list usually features the top talent in college football going into that season and oftentimes, the winner is also selected as the Heisman Trophy winner as well.
Downs is coming off a sophomore campaign in which he earned first-team All-ACC honors as well as being named a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award.
