After welterweight champion [autotag]Kamaru Usman[/autotag] finished Colby Covington earlier this month at UFC 245, he was asked about his next potential title defense being against [autotag]Jorge Masvidal[/autotag].
On two occasions – during the ESPN+ post-fight show and post-event news conference – Usman big-timed Masvidal by responding with a simple question: “Who?”
As if he doesn’t know who Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal is.
Here’s the thing about trying to pull off this move: You shouldn’t have a bunch of receipts out there showing just how impressed you are with Masvidal and how much respect you have for the guy you’re trying to diss.
- Like when Usman gave Masvidal props on “The Joe Rogan Experience” for the way he handled the Leon Edwards confrontation backstage. “Masvidal don’t give a f***,” he said.
- Or the times Usman admitted to liking Masvidal and giving him credit for paying his dues all these years.
- Or how about Usman’s jaw dropping as he stood cageside for Masvidal’s five-second knockout of Ben Askren at UFC 239?
All of those moments are included in a cleverly produced video that Masvidal posted on YouTube in which he answers: “That’s who.”
Masvidal could, in fact, be next in line for a title shot against Usman, assuming that’s what he wants to do. But it seems like Masvidal prefers to fight Conor McGregor next knowing the massive payday that would come with it. That, however, likely depends on the outcome of McGregor vs. Donald Cerrone on Jan. 18 at UFC 246.
So we’ll see.
