The Indianapolis Colts believed running back Jonathan Taylor would be off the board by the time they came around for their second pick of the second round in the 2020 NFL Draft.
When they were in striking distance of making a deal to get him, it was almost too good to be true in their eyes. Some had Taylor pegged as a first-round pick.
Draft Wire’s Luke Easterling listed Taylor as the Colts’ biggest steal throughout the draft.
It was somewhat of a luxury pick to grab Taylor in the second round. The Colts didn’t necessarily need him given what they have in Marlon Mack. But when considering the shelf life of running backs in the NFL and how much Taylor adds to the offense, it was too good to pass up.
Taylor has all of the accolades a running back could dream of coming out of college. He was a two-time Doak Walker Award Winner. He rushed for 6,174 yards and 50 touchdowns in his career. He proved he could handle a massive workload to the tune of 926 carries in college.
The Colts are the perfect situation for Taylor, who will have a role in the offense right away. He will be part of a two-headed attack with Mack leading the backfield, it only remains to be seen what that split will look like.
Regardless, the Colts are ecstatic to bring in Taylor to the offense and the selection could certainly be viewed as a steal.
