Jon Rahm has a chance to complete a rare PGA Tour feat (that Tiger Woods accomplished 14 times)

Why Jon Rahm has a good chance to accomplish a PGA Tour three-peat this week in San Diego.

Plain and simple, Jon Rahm is on an absolute heater right now.

The 28-year-old has won four of his last six events, including his last two starts on the PGA Tour at last week’s American Express and the season-opening Sentry Tournament of Champions two weeks prior. This week Rahm is in the Farmers Insurance Open field at Torrey Pines in San Diego and is looking for a rare three-peat.

If Rahm is able to win again, it’ll be the 19th time since 1997 that a player has won three straight Tour starts. But wait, what’s so rare about something that’s already happened 18 times over less than 26 years? According to stats guru Justin Ray, Tiger Woods accounts for 14 of the 18 trifectas.

Tiger’s career by the numbers is insane, but the stat above showcases just how special Rahm’s current run of form really is. Just last year Scottie Scheffler went on a run that also included four wins in six starts, which propelled the American to world No. 1 and saw him earn Player of the Year honors.

In three official starts this season, Rahm, currently ranked No. 3 in the world, has the two wins as well as a T-4 at the CJ Cup. It’s an early, small sample size, but the Spaniard currently leads the Tour in greens in regulation (81.02%), scoring average (68.89), and strokes gained off the tee (1.071).

What are the chances of Rahm completing the historic three-peat? Pretty good considering the Farmers was the site of his first PGA Tour win back in 2017. In the five starts since his win, Rahm has finished T-29 (2018), T-5 (2019), 2 (2020), T-7 (2021) and T-3 (2022).

So don’t be surprised if Rahm is at or near the top of the leaderboard this week. It’s kind of what he does now.
