Monday Jon Gruden said something that gave a lot a people some serious side-eye. He had said after the Raiders’ loss to the Dolphins, that he had no regrets about opting to run the clock and kick a field goal instead of punching it in for a touchdown. Mainly because the Dolphins move into field goal range on one play and won the game.
The play that did it was a blown coverage that led to a wide-open 34-yard catch with a roughing the passer penalty on Arden Key tacked onto it. It was a bad play, but it wouldn’t have been enough to lose the Raiders the game had they scored the touchdown instead of kneeling and kicking the field goal.
After a couple of days to think about it, Gruden was asked if he still had no regrets.
“Yeah, I have a regret because we lost the game on the most horrific play I’ve ever been associated with,” Gruden said.
I tweeted out the last part of that quote and it yielded quite a few responses from fans wondering how that play could possibly be more horrific than the Tuck Rule game in which Tom Brady’s obvious fumble that would have meant the Raiders beat the Patriots was overturned and they went on to win.
It was Charles Woodson who forced the fumble on Brady only to have it handed back to the Patriots after review.
So, naturally, Woodson might have strong feelings when Gruden says any other play would be more horrific than that. Woodson chimed in on it and put it all perfectly. In two words (and a facepalm emoji).
