Jon Gruden opens with the 4th-worst odds to win NFL Coach of the Year

Can you name the last Raiders’ coach to win the AP NFL Coach of the Year award? That’s right, you can’t as it has never happened in the NFL’s long history. And unfortunately, oddsmakers aren’t expecting it to happen in 2020 either,

According to BetMGM, Jon Gruden has the fourth-worst odds (+4000) to win the award this season with only Matt Patricia (+5000), Bill O’Brien (+5000) and Doug Marrone (+5000) having worse odds. Even a new head coach like Kevin Stefanski (+2000) has better odds to take home the honors than Gruden.

For Gruden to take home the award this season, the Raiders would likely need to make the playoffs and potentially win the division to earn the honors. The Raiders would likely need to win double-digit games and that would only put him in the conversation.

So is it wise to bet on Gruden to win the award in 2020? Probably not as the Raiders are still a fairly young team trying to compete for a wild card spot this season. However, stranger things have happened in the NFL and Gruden has proven to be a much better coach than several of the names listed ahead of him.

Keep an eye on Gruden as a darkhorse candidate to win the Coach of the Year award this season.
