Johnny Majors Classic: Vols defeat Pittsburgh in overtime

Tennessee earned an overtime road victory Saturday, defeating No. 14  Pittsburgh, 34-27, at Acrisue Stadium.

The Vols (2-0) overcame an early deficit and notched a 34-27 victory over Pittsburgh.

Tennessee scored the game-winning touchdown when Hendon Hooker connected with Cedric Tillman on a 28-yard scoring pass in overtime.

Tennessee sealed its victory by stopping the Panthers (1-1) on fourth down in overtime.

The Vols fell behind, 10-0, in the opening quarter. Ben Sauls kicked a 30-yard field goal and Israel Abankinda scored on a 76-yard touchdown run.

Tennessee scored on Jabari Small’s 1-yard run. Chase McGrath’s extra point pulled the Vols to within 10-7.

The Panthers took a 17-7 advantage when Kedon Slovis completed a 57-yard touchdown pass to tight end Gavin Bartholomew with 10 minutes, 4 seconds remaining in the first half.

In the third quarter, Sauls recorded a 35-yard field goal to pull the Panthers to within 24-20.

McGrath made a 51-yard field goal in the fourth quarter before the Panthers sent the game to overtime when Nick Patti threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Jared Wayne with 2:23 remaining in regulation.
