The Rams went the entire 2020 season without attempting a single fake punt with Johny Hekker, who attempted at least one pass in every season from 2012-2019. It had been two years since Sean McVay busted out that trick play – until he called a fake punt against the Giants on Sunday afternoon.
On fourth-and-11 from the Giants’ 42-yard line, Hekker completed a pass to Ben Skowronek on the left side for what appeared to be a 15-yard gain. But there were flags on the play. One on the Giants and one on the Rams, both for unsportsmanlike conduct.
The officials didn’t announce who the penalties were on and Sean McVay called it a “head scratcher” after the game, negating what would’ve been a huge conversion for the Rams.
Hekker didn’t seem thrilled by the call either, responding with a perfect tweet after the Rams’ win.
Get a pass completed for a first down…

Hekker will have to wait at least one more week to attempt another throw. Hopefully he doesn’t have to go a full season without throwing a pass like he did last year.
