It’s rare that a quarterback as inexperienced as John Wolford gets thrown into a starting role this late into the season with the team still fighting for playoff positioning. In fact, a start like Wolford’s hasn’t happened in at least 54 years.
According to ESPN Stats and Info, Wolford will become the first quarterback in the Super Bowl era, which dates back to 1966, to make his first career start in the final game of a season with his team still having a chance to make the playoffs.
The Rams’ playoff hopes are still very much alive, needing either a win over the Cardinals or a loss by Chicago to make the postseason.

Anticipation is high for Wolford’s first NFL start, largely because of the unknown that comes with it. He’s never played a regular-season snap and the last time we saw him play a game was in the 2019 preseason.
Wolford’s skill set is certainly intriguing thanks to his quick release and mobility outside the pocket, which has Rams fans excited heading into Sunday’s game.
