John Mooney Disappointed by Abrupt End to Notre Dame Career

John Mooney and his fellow seniors didn’t get a proper sendoff with Notre Dame.

One of the effects of the sports world coming to a halt was that John Mooney and his fellow seniors didn’t get a proper sendoff with Notre Dame. The Irish won what was to be their first game in the ACC tournament, but even that was against the backdrop of the possibility of no basketball the following or any other day this season. The chances of making the NCAA tournament as an at-large team were slim, but Mooney thinks the Irish could have won at least one more ACC tourney game.

Mooney expresses this thought in a feature story by Buddy Collings of the Orlando Sentinel, his hometown paper. Having returned to Longwood after completing his degree in business management, Mooney calls the way his Notre Dame career ended “disappointing”. His sentiments are shared by every other college athlete whose playing days ended before they should have this year.

Mooney hopes to keep his basketball career alive somehow. Most NBA draft projections don’t list him as a potential pick, but he says he’ll find a way. Maybe a legendary career somewhere in Europe will happen? We’ll see.
