It began as smoke and rumors. Then some tweets emerged from local Arkansas reporters. Finally, the smoke has rumors have gained substance. Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball coach John Calipari is in talks to become the coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Calipari is fresh off another disappointing finish to the season. The Wildcats haven’t advanced past the first weekend of March Madness since the 2018-19 season. This year, they lost to Oakland in round one.
Many fans called for Cal’s firing after the loss, but it appeared as though he would be back next year after meeting with athletic director Mitch Barnhart. Things change fast in the college basketball world, though.
Arkansas lost Eric Musselman after the season when he left for USC. They interviewed some other candidates, but have now zeroed in on Calipari.
Coach Cal has notified Kentucky that he is in negotiations with Arkansas, so there’s a very good chance that a deal happens. If so, Kentucky will be on the hunt for a new coach of their own.
Fan reaction is certain to be split on Cal’s leaving, if it happens. Many are ready for a fresh start, but some worry that the school won’t be able to adequately replace him.
If the change occurs, it will set off a huge chain reaction, and college basketball will feel a massive ripple effect.
