Joey Halzle joins Josh Heupel’s Tennessee staff

Josh Heupel was hired as Tennessee’s head coach on Jan. 27 after serving in the same capacity at UCF from 2018-20.

Josh Heupel was hired as Tennessee’s head coach on Jan. 27 after serving in the same capacity at UCF from 2018-20.

Heupel is in the process of assembling his first coaching staff at Tennessee.

Joey Halzle will serve as quarterbacks coach on Heupel’s Tennessee staff.

Halzle comes to Tennessee from UCF. He served as Heupel’s quarterbacks coach at UCF in 2020 and as an offensive quality control assistant in 2019.

Halzle has also worked alongside Heupel at Missouri, Utah State and Oklahoma.

When Heupel was Missouri’s offensive coordinator in 2016, Halzle served as an offensive analyst and assistant quarterback coach. He was in the same role at Utah State in 2015 when Heupel was offensive coordinator.

Halzle was an offensive graduate assistant at Oklahoma from 2012-14 after helping the Sooners from 2009-11 as an offensive quality control assistant. Heupel was Oklahoma’s co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2011-14 and oversaw the Sooners’ signal-callers between 2006-10.

Halzle worked in the private sector from 2017-18. He won three letters as a quarterback at Oklahoma from 2006-08.
