Joey Bosa got emotional as he recalled telling his family about the new Chargers contract

“It was a really cool moment. I’m never gonna forget it.”

Last week, the Los Angeles Chargers made Joey Bosa the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history as the two-time Pro Bowler signed a five-year, $135 million extension with the team.

Bosa, who is the son of former NFL defensive end John Bosa and the brother of 49ers standout Nick Bosa, obviously comes from a football family. And as HBO’s Hard Knocks crew captured Bosa making the record deal official, Joey grew emotional when it came to discussing the moment he broke the news of the contract to his family.

Given the coronavirus pandemic, Bosa’s family couldn’t be there for the signing. And that absence was evident in the video.

Bosa said:

“I wish I had my family here with me, but I’m happy. … My mom was a little calmer. They’re unbelievably proud. The best moment of it all was when my dad called me and I picked up that phone. And he was just so happy. And it was really cool. It was a really cool moment. I’m never gonna forget it.”

This season of Hard Knocks with the Chargers and Rams is set to debut on HBO on Aug. 11.
