Joel Klatt doesn’t think LSU is legit

Joel Klatt believes that LSU is a beneficiary of a strong end to the season last year.

LSU is off to a 3-1 start in the 2023 football season. The Tigers dropped the opening game to Florida State before rattling off three straight wins.

After surviving a scare against Arkansas last Saturday night, LSU dropped one spot in the polls and is now ranked as the No. 13 team in the country heading into this week’s game against the Ole Miss Rebels. Ole Miss is coming off of a loss to Alabama 24-10 and they dropped to No. 20 in the polls. On The Joel Klatt Show, Klatt talked about his thoughts on whether LSU is a contender for the College Football Playoffs or if they are just a pretender.

“LSU is not on the level,” Klatt said, per On3. “In fact, LSU is the fly in the ointment. Why are people not realizing that Florida State has some flaws? It’s because of what they thought about LSU coming into the year. We forgot about LSU and what they were a year ago. The Bama game was an anomaly. Their total wins number was a bit of an anomaly. They only beat Arkansas by three last year. They only beat Auburn by four and they were housed by Georgia, A&M and Tennessee.

“If you really looked at LSU and you’re like, ‘Maybe they weren’t quite as good.’ Listen, I fell into the trap. I had them up there in the top 10 and I fell into the trap. So when Florida State beat LSU, I’m like ‘Well this means Florida State is really good.’ But does it?”

Klatt believes that LSU is a beneficiary of a strong end to the season last year. That led to all of the hype surrounding the team this fall and he doesn’t think LSU will live up to that hype.
