The Philadelphia 76ers have been looking for upgrades to their roster in order to properly contend for a title, but probably the most important order of business for them was to sign their superstar big man to an extension.
The Sixers took care of Joel Embiid on Tuesday morning as they agreed to a 4-year $196 million supermax extension with the big fella. The extension is certainly earned as Embiid has morphed into arguably the best big man in the world averaging 28.5 points and 10.6 rebounds in the 2020-21 season. The deal will keep him in Philadelphia through the 2026-27 season.
Embiid has taken steps forward as a player to become more rounded. He has attacked double teams more efficiently and he has been one of the more dominant players on either end of the floor. Getting this done is a huge move for both him and the franchise.
Sources: 76ers star Joel Embiid has agreed to a four-year, $196 million super maximum contract extension. Major extension for the 2021 NBA MVP runner-up.

As the Sixers move forward, the priority is making sure that they win a title while Embiid is upright and healthy. As terrific as the MVP runner-up is, he has sustained a lot of injuries to his body and the franchise has to be able to win now while he is still a top player. They cannot waste his prime right now.
