Joe Rogan thinks Will Smith was out of line for slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars.
During the 94th Annual Academy Awards, which took place Sunday at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, Rock referenced the movie “G.I. Jane” when making a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and her shaved head. She has been open about shaving her head after she started losing her hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata.
Smith was seated in the front as a Best Actor nominee for the movie “King Richard” – an award he won later in the night. He walked to the stage from his seat and aggressively slapped Rock. When he sat back down, he twice yelled at Rock to keep his wife’s name “out (of) your f*cking mouth.”
Many in the MMA community defended Smith’s actions – perhaps even a majority, based on social media posts. But Rogan, not surprisingly, is backing his fellow comedian.
“I think (Smith) was being emotionally fragile and he acted on impulse, and I think it’s a foolish impulse that you do when you know there’s no consequences,” Rogan said on “The Joe Rogan Experience.” “So you’re hitting a very small person. … You don’t go and sit in the front row. You’re a star at the Oscars. There’s a professional comedian whose job is to roast people. That’s what he’s doing, and what he did was not even insulting. It was a mild joke.
“The idea that you think it’s smart while wearing a tuxedo to walk onto a stage in front of the world, like literally the world, (at) one of the biggest award shows on earth, if not the biggest, and smack a comedian for the most mild joke and then sit there quivering, saying, ‘Keep my wife’s name out of your f*cking mouth,’ and everybody’s just going to sit there in the sh*t that you just took on the table. You just pulled your pants down and took a sh*t on the dinner table and they all have to just sit there and look at that.”
Rogan has been in a host of headlines himself lately. The comedian, longtime UFC analyst and podcast host recently was accused of helping spread COVID-19 vaccine misinformation through guests on his show. He also was called out for repeatedly using the N-word in years past, which Rogan apologized for.
