If Tom Brady were to take in advice on his future from anyone, Joe Montana would be the guy.
Brady, 42, has a looming free agency decision ahead of him after playing for the New England Patriots for 20 years. He’s hitting free agency for the first time in his career is opening himself up to the possibility of leaving. Speculation has floated around heavily over the past few months, and many people have inserted their opinions.
Montana, a Hall of Famer with four Super Bowl rings, provides an opinion that’s extremely valid. He spent 13 years in his career with the San Francisco 49ers and finished off his last two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.
He shared some advice for Brady while speaking with NFL Network’s Michael Silver.
“Don’t — if you don’t have to,” Montana said. “It’s a process to go through, and it takes time to get used to the team.”
It’s not easy to go to another team and get accepted, no matter how much success you’ve had and how many years you’ve played. They still want to see you come in and be the same player and be that loyal to them as you were to the other team you just left. So, it’s not easy [for] guys looking at that change, especially at the quarterback position.”
Patriots owner Robert Kraft doesn’t want the legendary quarterback to go anywhere, and Brady’s in a position to still compete for championships with New England. If winning is his ultimate goal, it’s likely that his best chance of doing it is in Foxborough. Brady still has some time to make a decision, and the whole NFL world will be curiously waiting for that time to come.
I just can’t see how they would let him leave there, myself,” Montana said.
