While Michigan football has seen a lot of players transfer out of the program, not just in recent years, but this offseason has seen even more attrition, seemingly.
The Wolverines have lost Zach Charbonnet (UCLA), Christian Turner and Luiji Vilain (Wake Forest), Adam Shibley (Notre Dame), Hunter Reynolds (Utah State), Ben VanSumeren (MSU), Zach Carpenter (Indiana), as well as Phillip Paea and William Mohan. But the most notable has been Joe Milton, the strong-armed quarterback who started out the 2020 season for the Wolverines.
However, despite a solid first performance against Minnesota, things didn’t go as anticipated for the player who was often compared (usually by Urban Meyer, weirdly enough) to Cam Newton. We never really got to see that strong arm in action as the Wolverines looked to use an intermediate passing game with Milton in the lineup. He started five games for Michigan football, but lost his job to Cade McNamara for the final outing of the season. Thus, he opted to transfer out of the program.
And, according to Rocky Top Insider, Milton is Tennessee-bound.
The Tennessee football program has added another quarterback to their roster. As the NCAA adopted the one time transfer rule last week, it gave players around the country an opportunity at a fresh start.
This is exactly what former Michigan quarterback Joe Milton is looking for in Knoxville. According to multiple sources, the former Wolverine has been admitted into Tennessee for the 2021 summer session and will join the football team once spring practice ends. He has already been getting to know some of his future teammates in Knoxville, since he’s been around town.
The Volunteers were long an SEC powerhouse until the mid-aughts, but have since been in rebuild mode. Tennessee is on yet another new head coach having brought in Josh Heupel, who most recently coached at UCF.
With 2020 being a free year, with Milton having redshirted his first year, he should have three years of eligibility remaining.
