When the Golden State Warriors acquired Chris Paul from the Washington Wizards, there was a quiet belief the front office would look to flip the veteran before the trade deadline. Paul, 38, has never filled a bench role and could struggle to adapt to the Warriors brand of basketball.
However, according to Warriors owner Joe Lacob, who was speaking with The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami on a recent episode of “The TK Show,” Golden State has no plans to trade Paul. Instead, the Warriors are hoping the veteran guard can become a vital addition to their roster and help spur the team toward another championship run.
“There’s a lot of possibilities,” Lacob said. “But I don’t think our goal, quite frankly, is to trade Chris Paul away or do something with that contract. We like the idea of having Chris Paul on the team. And we’re excited about it. So let’s see what happens, how it works and how successful we are, and we’ll take it from there.”
If Steve Kerr can find a role that both suits Paul’s playing style and fills a need for the Warriors, the future Hall of Famer will be a huge asset to Golden State in the upcoming season. However, the first thing Kerr and Paul will need to discuss is whether he will be coming off the bench or part of the team’s starting rotation.
Logic dictates Paul will become Golden State’s sixth man next season, yet the Veteran guard will need to buy into the role for the experiment to truly work.
