Some prospects embrace NFL comparisons with hopes of providing evaluators a glimpse at their upside. At their best, a prospect might eventually play like this or that pro. But comparisons are a look at what a player could be, and that can set dangerous expectations for a player.
The likely No. 1 overall pick, Joe Burrow drew comparisons to Tom Brady at the NFL combine. That comparison may be too lofty, even by Burrow’s estimation.
“Please don’t compare me to the best player of all time,” he said, per Bleacher Report. “Let me do my own thing. Don’t do that to me. Please.”
It’s a wise move for Burrow.
Some have said Burrow’s pro comp is Brady.

Some of the other quarterback prospects have invited comparison, with Iowa quarterback Nate Stanley suggesting his throwing motion is “similar to” that of Brady. Utah’s Jordan Love embraced comparisons to Patrick Mahomes.
It’s natural in the pre-draft process for folks to make comparisons, but Brady and Mahomes are two of the game’s greats. Burrow, Love and Stanley have a very long way to go to earn and justify those comparison. And perhaps that’s why Burrow wants to avoid them altogether.
