J.J. Redick on what to expect from Ben Simmons when he returns

J.J. Redick says Ben Simmons can make a big difference for the Nets despite not playing all season long to this point.

Ben Simmons is listed as out for Game 2 on Wednesday night in Boston, but it’s believed that barring any setbacks, Simmons will make his debut for the Nets either in Game 3 or Game 4 in Brooklyn. Simmons was cleared for full contact this week, and is beginning to practice along with his teammates.

During ESPN’s Get Up, Redick made the case that Simmons’ game is uniquely suited for a comeback with little practice beforehand, as his strengths rely on his physical presence.

“I’m expecting a lot [from Simmons], yeah, if he’s able to play. Here’s the thing: Ben Simmons’ game is not reliant on feel or rhythm or touch.

Ben Simmons’ game is reliant on ‘can I go up and down the floor, and can I guard?’

…. He’s not going to play if he can’t physically move the way he wants to move. They’re not going to put him out there if his back is all messed up. Look, if he can play, I expect him to make an impact – defensively, playmaking. Their closing lineup with him at the 5, especially against a team like the Celtics, that’s dangerous to me.”
