Jimmy Garoppolo has been excused from the 49ers’ mandatory minicamp, which was bumped up a week and will take place June 7-9. The excused absence is the latest sign pointing to Garoppolo’s eventual exit from San Francisco.
Garoppolo has spent the offseason rehabbing his surgically repaired throwing shoulder away from the team facility. He’s due to start throwing toward the end of June or early July.
The excused absence means Garoppolo won’t be fined for his lack of attendance, and his continued journey away from the club is a clear indication that neither side anticipates the relationship continuing far beyond his rehab period.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said the team still expects to trade Garoppolo. Quarterbacks coach Brian Griese hasn’t spoken to Garoppolo since being hired.
The 49ers have gone through the offseason with Trey Lance, Nate Sudfeld and Brock Purdy as their three signal callers, and that’ll continue into the mandatory period where the team expects all of its players to be in attendance.
Rumors that Garoppolo will stick around into the regular season have been floating since February, but the 49ers’ actions continue to say otherwise.
