Jimmy Garoppolo and Kyle Shanahan have spent the past two weeks working on a game plan to beat the Chiefs in Super Bowl 54.
But over the past few seasons they’ve also taken some time to look back at a night that worked out very differently for both men – Super Bowl 51 in Houston.
Garoppolo was Tom Brady’s backup on the Patriots that night and watched as New England came back from a 28-3 deficit to beat Shanahan and the Falcons in the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history… and also the worst collapse in Super Bowl history.
Shanahan, who was the offensive coordinator of the Falcons that year, has been asked a number of times this week about that collapse and he hasn’t shied away from providing thoughtful answers about it. He’s learned from it and has talked about that situation as only made him stronger as a person and coach.
Garoppolo told me on Wednesday that he has joked about it a few times with Shanahan and they’ve also had some serious conversations about it:

Falcons fans might not like that at first but come on, you have to be able to joke about your worst of times to help you get through things. It’s healthy!
