Although the NBA season is on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, Miami Heat guard Jimmy Butler delivered perhaps the biggest assist of the year recently to some of his teammates.
According to Eric Woodyard of ESPN, Butler teamed up with Lifetime Products to ship 21 portable basketball hoops to his teammates and members of the Heat coaching staff to use during the downtime from the season. The basketball hoops will eventually be donated to local youth centers in Miami once they are no longer needed.
With the NBA season suspended until further notice, players have been forced to get creative with workouts. Most players either live in apartments and do not have access to basketball hoops while others do not have hoops at their homes. Heat rookie Tyler Herro said he just moved into a house recently and the hoop arrived at the perfect time.
I love the game, so whatever’s available for us or for me to be able to work out is really whatever we can make work and what we’ve got to do right now. So, having just that hoop, some guys aren’t even able to do that because they stay in apartments, so when I moved into the house it was a no-brainer to have the hoop and it just kept me motivated. I do some dribbling outside in the driveway and then with the hoop, my boys rebound for me and I just get shots up. My normal workout.
The hoops can give players an opportunity to work on some shooting drills and other related workouts. Portable hoops are undoubtedly different from those in practice facilities but the gesture by Butler should ensure the Heat won’t be too rusty once the season resumes.
