Jets WR Denzel Mims in doubt for Week 14 as he tends to personal matter

Due to the NFL’s COVID-19 protocols, Jets WR Denzel Mims could miss Sunday’s game against the Seahawks as he tends to a family emergency.

Denzel Mims won’t practice on Wednesday after the rookie receiver left Florham Park and returned to Texas to deal with a family emergency, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

While Mims’ focus is on his family and not football at the moment, it’s unlikely he will be able to play Sunday against the Seahawks, even if he returns to New Jersey later this week. Due to the league’s COVID-19 protocols, Mims would have to undergo testing, which would put his status for Sunday in doubt.

Mims would need to receive back-to-back negative tests to play Sunday. If Mims can’t suit up in Seattle, Jeff Smith would likely start in his place.

In six games this season, Mims has caught 19 of 36 targets for 324 yards. He missed a significant amount of time earlier this year while nursing multiple hamstring injuries.

As for Gang Green’s injuries, Ashtyn Davis, Bennett Jackson, Jordan Jenkins and Greg Van Roten will all be held out of practice on Wednesday. Frank Gore is still in the concussion protocol but will practice on a limited basis. Adam Gase said, per ESPN’s Rich Cimini, that he expects all three of New York’s running backs — Gore, Ty Johnson and Josh Adams — to be available for Sunday’s contest.

In addition, Pat Elflein (shoulder/ankle), George Fant (knee), Marcus Maye (rib), Conor McGovern (back/hamstring) and Breshad Perriman (shoulder) all joined Gore as limited participants during Wednesday’s practice.

New York could also be getting back some reinforcements this week, as Bless Austin and Trevon Wesco have been designated to return to practice.
