Jets shake things up at kicker for second-straight week

The New York Jets are going to have a new kicker… again.

The Jets (3-6) visit the Arizona Cardinals (5-4) for a must-win contest in Week 10.

Rookie Spencer Shrader is set to be the man in charge of the kicking duties for the Jets in the important outing, according to interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to New York’s kicker news.

Last week, Shrader and Riley Patterson were signed amid Greg Zuerlein struggling this season. Then Zuerlein ended up on injured reserve anyway and Patterson was named his replacement last week against the Houston Texans.

Now Shrader will get his chance as Patterson was released by the Jets on Friday.

In addition, there’s another new kicker coming to town. Anders Carlson signed to New York’s practice squad.

Carlson joins the Jets after being released by the San Francisco 49ers this week. Carlson was serving as Jake Moody’s replacement and now Moody is healthy.

This season, Carlson connected on all five of his attempts while subbing in.

Carlson was originally a sixth-round pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2023. He went 27-for-33 on field goals and missed five of his 39 extra points in his first season and then the Packers let him go.

While Patterson hit on all of his extra point attempts (no field goals) last week against the Texans, some point toward his less-than-stellar kickoff skills as a reason why a change has potentially come about.
