Jets request to interview Commanders’ Joe Whitt

The New York Jets requested to interview Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Joe Whitt for the Jets’ head coaching vacancy.

The 2024 NFL regular season came to a close over a week ago, and while there are still eight teams vying for the coveted Super Bowl Championship, the rest of the league is in offseason mode. For teams at the bottom of the league, that typically means coaching or general manager changes.

The New York Jets are one such team on the hunt for a new head coach after firing Robert Saleh before the season ended, and they have requested to interview Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Joe Whitt for their open head coaching spot.

Whitt joined the Commanders in 2024 in his first stint as a defensive coordinator, and what he did with the defense this year is commendable. The run defense left a lot to be desired, but the Commanders are having their best season since 1991, and the defense absolutely plays a role.

Prior to joining the Commanders, Whitt was a pass game coordinator for several years for various teams. He first joined the coaching ranks in 2001 as a student assistant at Auburn University and joining the NFL in 2007.

An interview date has not been set for Whitt as of this writing, nor have the Commanders responded to the interview request.

The Commanders face the Detroit Lions this Saturday in the divisional round of the playoffs.
