Jets hire Tony Dews as running backs coach

The Jets have hired former Titans assistant coach Tony Dews to be their new running backs coach, per Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports.

Dews spent the last six seasons in Tennessee, five coaching the running backs before moving over to the tight ends last season. Dews reunites with offensive line coach Keith Carter. The two spent five years together under head coach Mike Vrabel.

Dews replaces Taylor Embree, whom the Jets decided not to bring back for a fourth season with the team.

In Dews’ five seasons as the running backs coach, Derrick Henry rushed for 1,000 yards four times — and easily would have been five as he rushed for 937 yards in just eight games in 2021. Of those four seasons, three saw at least 1,500 yards for Henry and 2020 saw Henry become just the eighth running back in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season when he went for 2,037.

Henry has also posted six straight seasons with at least ten rushing touchdowns. That could bode very well for the prospects this season for Breece Hall, who totaled almost 1,600 yards in 2023.
