Jerod Mayo’s comments could hint at Drake Maye being the starter

Jerod Mayo had some interesting comments on Drake Maye and the Patriots quarterback situation.

With the 2024 preseason in the books, the New England Patriots still haven’t named a starting quarterback in the battle between Drake Maye and Jacoby Brissett.

The focus shifts to Week 1 and head coach Jerod Mayo will have a big decision to make after training camp and the three preseason games. But on Monday, Mayo admitted something that may have hinted at what his decision is going to be.

“Jacoby may come in here today and say his shoulder is no good,” Mayo said, via Mike Reiss of ESPN.com. “So I’m not going to get too far down the road on if Jacoby could play or couldn’t play. What I will say is this is a true competition and I would say at this current point, Drake has outplayed Jacoby. Now, in saying that, we have to take in the full body of work going all the way back to the spring and beginning of training camp. And we’ll see where we end up, but those are the conversations that will happen here over the next couple days.”

But here’s where things get interesting.

After Sunday’s preseason game against Washington in which Brissett suffered a shoulder injury, Mayo was asked about the quarterbacks and said “100% (Drake Maye) is our second-best quarterback on our roster right now.” Hours later, he had the comment that Maye out-performed Brissett in the competition.

Maye has out-performed Brissett in the preseason which is a factor in this competition. But is it the deciding factor? We will see.

Still, this is great news for Maye’s chances to be the starter come week 1.
