The New England Patriots plan on starting rookie quarterback Drake Maye in Sunday’s regular season finale against the Buffalo Bills.
Coach Jerod Mayo said the possibility of Maye resting in the last game of the season was under consideration when speaking with media members on Monday. On Wednesday, however, he had a more clear tone that appeared to be leaning toward Maye playing in the final game of the season.
“He’s a competitor. He wants to play, and he’s still developing. So he’ll be ready to go,” Mayo said on Maye. “…Drake is our starting quarterback. If he’s healthy and ready to go as we go through this week of practice, then he’ll play.”
Bills quarterback Josh Allen is expected to start in Sunday’s game against the Patriots, but he isn’t likely to be in the game for long with Buffalo having already clinched a spot in the playoffs.
The Patriots currently own the No. 1 overall pick of the 2025 NFL draft. With Maye playing against the Bills’ backups, they could win that game and knock themselves out of that draft position.
It could all depend on how long the Patriots consider playing Maye and their other starters in the game.
