New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo confirmed on Monday that Jacoby Brissett will remain the starting quarterback, one day after the team’s 30-13 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
Brissett’s struggles in the passing attack continued for the Patriots. The veteran signal-caller went 19-of-32 passing for 168 yards, a touchdown and an interception. His 70.8 quarterback rating was his lowest of the season.
He struggled against a ferocious 49ers defensive line that recorded six sacks and 10 quarterback hits in the game. Through four games, Brissett’s 536 total passing yards rank last in the NFL, and his two passing touchdowns are tied for 29th in the league.
“Jacoby is 100% our starter,” Mayo told media members, via ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “He’s done a good job doing what we’ve asked. Are there a lot of plays he could do a better job? Absolutely. But I would never question his toughness, dependability and leadership style for this team. That’s what we need right now.”
One has to wonder if the Patriots will utilize rookie quarterback Drake Maye at any point during the season.
The quarterback position needs a spark for New England, but problems beyond the quarterback’s control, including injuries and the inconsistent play of the offensive line loom large.
