Jerod Mayo believes Drake Maye is ‘100 percent’ ready to run offense

Drake Maye is ready to run the Patriots’ offense

If the season started today, New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo is completely confident in rookie quarterback Drake Maye to run the offense.

Jacoby Brissett is currently the No. 1 quarterback, but Maye has closed the gap on the veteran. According to Mayo, the team expects to make a decision on their starting quarterback as soon as Monday night.

Maye’s confidence has grown over the last two preseason games. He has gone 8-of-14 for 66 yards in both outings combined. He has also added a rushing touchdown to his total in last week’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The in-game reps and practice work are obviously paying off, and Mayo feels more comfortable about Maye’s knowledge of the offense.

“100 percent. I think he’s ready to run a huddle,” Mayo told the media on Wednesday.

Maye being ready to run the offense doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll win the starting job right out of the gates, but it does mean the Patriots could turn to him without hesitation if Brissett struggles.

It’s likely only a matter of time before the rookie takes the reins under center.
