Jedd Fisch says he needs to do a better job preparing Washington for early kicks

Jedd Fisch took the blame for his players not being properly adjusted to the time change against Iowa.

Traveling across multiple time zones used to be extremely rare in college football, but with conference realignment, it has become commonplace for the Washington Huskies after joining the Big Ten. Jedd Fisch’s team is 0-2 when having to traverse multiple time zones and have to do so again on Saturday to the Eastern Time Zone to take on the Indiana Hoosiers.

Most recently, the Huskies suffered their worst loss of the season, falling 40-16 at Iowa, and in an interview with Seattle Sports’ Brock and Salk, Fisch admitted that not only is the travel harder than it gets credit for.

“It’s unique, and it’s harder than maybe any of us wanted to give it credit for early on,” Fisch said on Wednesday. “You start realizing that they’re all victims of network TV slots, and we’re all looking at ways to figure out a way to get your team ready to go when you’re waking them up at 4:30 [a.m.] their body time and asking them to go play in a competitive football game like we experienced against Iowa.”

Fisch also went on to take responsibility for the game at Iowa and said that he’s trying a completely different approach.

“There’s a lot of things that I’m doing that’s different this week playing Indiana than I did against Iowa,” he continued. “And to be honest with you, I didn’t do a good enough job getting our team ready for the physical demand of the travel to Iowa and for the physical demand of the game that Iowa brings you, and that’s something that we have to learn…we are taking a totally different approach in terms of what our schedule looks like and how we were able to hopefully get our bodies right.”
