Following Washington’s season-opening victory over Weber State, Jedd Fisch announced the installation of a new tradition, naming one player “Dawg of the Week” for their excellence both on and off the field. Quarterback Will Rogers took home the inaugural honor, while defensive tackle Jayvon Parker earned it following the Huskies’ 30-9 win over Eastern Michigan.
“It’s somebody that represents this program on and off the field,” Fisch said when defining the honor. “Somebody that has done an incredible job at coming in every day and acting like a pro, behaving like a pro, and preparing like a pro. When we talk about it with our guys and when you get that award, it means you’ve done things outside of the game and inside the playing field.”
On the field, Parker made a very strong contribution in his first game of the season after sitting out against Weber State while recovering from a knee injury he suffered during spring practice that required a minor procedure to correct. He racked up 3 tackles and a 1/2 sack, combining with edge rusher Zach Durfee.
Parker was also critical on Washington’s opening drive stop on the goal line, combining with linebacker Carson Bruener to make a stop on third and goal, but has been just as impactful off the field as a mentor to redshirt freshman Elinneus Davis.
“He’s done a really good job of learning from Jayvon Parker and listening to him,” Fisch said on Monday. “Jayvon has done a really good job of taking him under his wing.”
As the junior continues to develop as both a leader and pass rusher, he could have more honors coming his way in the future.
