Jarrett Stidham explains how he felt when Patriots signed Cam Newton

The quarterback had a measured reaction to the Patriots signing Newton.

In a year that has taken several twists and turns, New England Patriots quarterback Jarrett Stidham had what he called a “wild” offseason.

Stidham was on the path to be the starting quarterback for New England. However, the Patriots signed Cam Newton in June, igniting a quarterback competition that will also include Brian Hoyer.

Nevertheless, Stidham, a 2019 fourth-round pick out of Auburn, seemed measured about the whole process. In a press conference on Friday, he gave his initial thoughts about the Patriots signing the 2015 NFL MVP. It’s become clear that he is not afraid of competition, as New England embarks on its first season in the post-Tom Brady era.

“I was actually back in Texas visiting some family when everything happened,” Stidham said. “Honestly, I was excited. What a great opportunity to compete with another great player — compete with Hoy and Cam. I was actually really excited for the opportunity ahead.”

Stidham said he’ll “absolutely” help Newton as they work together to learn the offense.

“We’re all in that room together and we’re all there to help each other,” Stidham said. “That is what it is all about.”

This will be just one of the many storylines heading into Patriots training camp. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
