We don’t yet know who will line up behind (or next to) Jared Goff in the backfield when the Rams first take the field on Sunday night against Dallas, but it’s sure to be either Malcolm Brown, Cam Akers or Darrell Henderson. After cutting Todd Gurley, the Rams are sorting out their now-crowded backfield that’s almost sure to feature some sort of committee approach.
Goff will be the one handing off to the three running backs, and his level of comfort remains high despite the departure of Gurley. He likes what he’s seen from the Rams’ tailbacks, specifically mentioning the rapid growth of Akers.
“Very comfortable, very comfortable,” Goff said Wednesday. “Those guys have done a great job. I think Cam in particular, just being a rookie and stepping up and doing a good job has been cool to see. But Malcolm has always been that veteran presence for us and Darrell has started to become that veteran for us as well. It’s been good and we feel really good about the running backs as whole right now and that rotation for them. I feel very comfortable.”
Sean McVay hasn’t said who will get the bulk of the carries or receive the most playing time, which is a nightmare for fantasy players. But considering the team spent a second-round pick – its first pick overall in the draft – on Akers, he’s likely to emerge as the top guy at some point.
But it’ll likely be a week-to-week decision dictated by flow and the hot hand when it comes to who gets most of the playing time in the backfield.
