Projected first-round pick Jared Butler is reportedly not permitted to play or practice in the NBA until he is cleared by a Fitness-to-Play panel, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Butler was reportedly diagnosed with a heart condition when he first committed to play at Alabama in 2018. He then transferred to Baylor and was later cleared to play as a full participant in each of the past three seasons with the Bears.

The panel consists of three physicians, one who is recommended by the NBA, another by the NBPA and the third by the first two physicians. Players are referred to the panel when they and a team disagree over whether or not they should be playing.

Butler may only participate in interviews, meetings and other off-court exams.

Butler is widely considered to be a first-round pick after a strong junior campaign with Baylor, in which he was named the NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player after scoring 17 points in the Final Four and 22 points in the national title game.

The 6-foot-3 guard averaged 16.7 points, 4.8 assists, 3.3 rebounds and two steals in 30 games last season, earning All-Big 12 First Team honors in the process. He shot 41.6% from 3-point range on 6.2 attempts per game on the season.

With the NBA now referring Butler to the Fitness-to-Play panel, his future in the league could be in question. Of course, a potential heart condition takes precedence over basketball as the NBA community will be hoping for a full recovery for him.
