James Harden, Joel Embiid discuss importance for Sixers to improve roster

James Harden and Joel Embiid discuss the importance for the Philadelphia 76ers to improve the roster.

PHILADELPHIA — After the Philadelphia 76ers fell to the Miami Heat in Game 6 of their second-round series to end their season, the focus turned to the offseason. The Sixers have a very good roster, but it clearly isn’t good enough to compete for a championship.

When a team has James Harden and Joel Embiid, it will have a puncher’s chance to win a title. However, the duo need help from others in a postseason series.

The Sixers have a flawed roster beyond Harden, Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Tobias Harris. The bench was up and down, and Philadelphia must bolster that group as well as find the right fits for around the stars.

“It’s gonna be huge,” said Harden of the summer. “Roster, finding things that work, what doesn’t work, and just get to know each other. We’ve been here for two/three months. We got a summer to be great. Individually and collectively and we’re looking for it.”

For Embiid, this is the fourth time in five seasons he has fallen in the Eastern Conference semifinals. He had to battle through the concussion protocol as well as an orbital fracture and a torn ligament in his thumb just to be on the floor. He understands how important this summer will be.

“Obviously, we lost, so I guess we wasn’t good enough,” he said. “A lot of things could’ve changed. Maybe in the first two games of this series and you don’t know. If I was fully healthy, you don’t know what could have happened, but the facts are that we lost. As far as what we have to do, I’m not the GM. I’m not the president, I don’t make those decisions so these guys, they’re gonna do what it takes to win a championship and if it means trading people or signing new people or trading me, that’s what they’re gonna do.”

It will be on president Daryl Morey to make the right decisions to help the franchise.
