Pro Football Focus has become the gold standard for itemizing statistics as well as digging deep into coaches and players and what makes them better than others. In their build-up into a new college football season, they have begun ranking coaches and players with the latest piece being a complete coaches rank.
[autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] has been on different site’s radar before, previously he was ranked fourth when On3 organized Big Ten coaches with him notably behind Luke Fickel. Once again, he is the fourth-ranked coach in the Big Ten behind Fickel by PFF but he is ranked 10th overall in the country.
PFF spoke of Franklin by stating “After a couple of down years in 2020 and 2021, Franklin has Penn State once again on the verge of a College Football Playoff berth… before taking over at Penn State, he led Vanderbilt to ranked finishes in 2012 and 2013. The Commodores haven’t done that since 1948 and haven’t been able to do so since his departure.”
The point on what he was able to do at Vanderbilt is arguably more impressive than any season he has put together outside of the 2022 season. He has shown time and again that he can raise the level of execution from his players while also preparing them for the NFL.
Franklin as mentioned was ranked 10th overall with the next highest coach being ranked 25th in the form of the newcomer to the Big Ten, Matt Rhule.
