The USC fan base is concerned about Lincoln Riley and whether the Trojans’ head coach can bounce back from 8-5 setback in 2023. Meanwhile, Penn State is coming off a relatively typical season under coach James Franklin: 10 wins, with the losses coming against Ohio State, Michigan, and in the bowl game against Ole Miss. Franklin has been excellent at winning the 10 games he is supposed to win every season, but beating the big boys has been an obstacle. Penn State has never made the College Football Playoff. The Nittany Lions have come really close a few times, but haven’t gotten over the hump.
We asked Penn State insider Marty Leap a question on our USC-Penn State preview show at The Voice of College Football: Is James Franklin’s body of work something PSU fans should be happy with, or are the losses to Ohio State and (more recently) Michigan overriding the good work Franklin has done in Happy Valley? The follow-up: If Franklin continues to go 10-2 on a regular basis, will that fly with Penn State and the fan base?
