Jamal Murray and Donovan Mitchell are making history in the first round

It’s not often that we’re blessed with a Game 7 the very first round of the NBA playoffs, so we should be thankful to the Basketball Gods for that alone.

But then, when you think about the Game 7 that we’re about to get from Jamal Murray and Donovan Mitchell as the Nuggets and Jazz face off for one final time on Tuesday night? This is hoops heaven.

It really doesn’t get any better than this. The matchup between these two has crossed historic thresholds time and time again throughout this series. We’ve never really seen anything like this in the history of the sport. Seriously.

Let’s just start here. The two players are combining for a whopping 72.7 points per game. That alone tells you what type of time they’ve been on in this series going head to head.

Break that number down and it gets even better. They’ve combined for 267 total points together over the last three games of the series. According to ESPN’s Kirk Goldsberry, that’s the highest point total over a three game postseason span in league history.

They’ve passed names like Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, LeBron James and Jerry West in terms of scoring. That’s, uh, some pretty good company to keep no matter what way you cut it.

Since we’re talking about good company, this is another pretty good list to be on. Before this series, only two players in NBA history have had multiple 50-point games in a single playoff series: Michael Jordan and Allen Iverson.

Guess what? We can add two more names to that. Donovan Mitchell and Jamal Murray.

Murray also joins MJ in being the only player in league history to have three straight playoff games with at least 40 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists.

Mitchell is set to join another elite class himself. He’s just 10 points away from passing LeBron James for the most points scored in a first round playoff series.

This matchup is historic. At this point, it’s looking like the NBA should just let these dudes play one-on-one to see who wins. Personally, I wouldn’t be opposed to it.

Either way, this game 7 is going to be quite a treat.
