Jalen Suggs to miss Magic preseason finale vs. Celtics with illness

Suggs will finish the preseason averaging five points, 3.7 rebounds, three assists and 1.3 blocks in three games.

Jalen Suggs will not play on Wednesday in the Orlando Magic’s preseason finale versus the Boston Celtics due to an illness unrelated to the coronavirus, the team announced.

Suggs played in each of the three previous preseason games with the Magic, averaging five points, 3.7 rebounds, three assists and 1.3 blocked shots in 22.6 minutes per game. He will finish the preseason having shot just 27.3% from the field, including 20% from 3-point range.

Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley has commended Suggs for the energy and effort he has brought throughout training camp and the preseason. Suggs showed that he is more than willing to make hustle plays on a nightly basis, something the team is excited about.

Said Suggs this month:

My effort, that takes no skill every night. It just takes you wanting to go out there and actually do it and give it your all. Shots are going to fall. Sometimes the ball’s going to bounce your way and sometimes it isn’t. But defense, rebounding and talking — all of those things are things that take no talent and you can do every night.

Suggs, by sitting on Wednesday, will miss one last opportunity to play ahead of the start of the regular season. He likely would have played a few more minutes versus Boston with the rotation tightening up a bit, but will instead use the night to rest.

Orlando will open the regular season with the San Antonio Spurs on Oct. 20.
