Jalen Ramsey voted 2nd-best CB in NFL, called ‘the Amari Cooper of corners’

Jalen Ramsey is still highly regarded around NFL circles.

There’s no doubt Jalen Ramsey’s peak year came in 2017 when he made his first Pro Bowl and was a first-team All-Pro. He picked off four passes and broke up 17 total that season, helping lead the Jaguars all the way to the AFC Championship Game.

He’s made the Pro Bowl in each of the last two seasons, too, but it was in 2017 that he was considered the best cornerback in the league. Some still hold that sentiment, but most have put Stephon Gilmore ahead of him now – especially after the Patriots corner won Defensive Player of the Year in 2019.

A poll of 50 NFL executives, coaches, players and scouts reveals that Ramsey is still held in high regard, though. ESPN conducted the poll and Ramsey came in at No. 2 based on an average of the votes received, with his highest ranking being No. 1 and his lowest No. 7.

One NFL defensive coach said, “After one year in L.A. he’ll be No. 1,” which is a testament to how much he’ll benefit from a change of scenery and a full season with the Rams. A veteran quarterback wasn’t as effusive with his praise, however, calling Ramsey “the Amari Cooper of corners” – and that’s not necessarily a compliment.

“There are some inconsistencies you see on tape with footwork or freelancing a bit,” the quarterback said. “But he’s too talented not to put it all together this year.”

Last season, Ramsey had nothing but great things to say about Cooper. He called him “one of the most underrated receivers in the league.”

“If you actually turn on the film and look at it, he was eating me up all game long – especially on the line with his releases,” Ramsey said. And based on Ramsey’s comments, it’s likely he’ll take the Cooper comparison as a compliment.

The highest remark Ramsey received was an offensive coach saying “he scares you on the game plan more than just about anyone,” adding that he’s “a one-of-a-kind” type of player.

Ramsey is entering the final year of his contract, so he has plenty to play for in L.A. He wants a lucrative new deal soon, whether it’s an extension with the Rams or from someone else in free agency next year – if the Rams even let him hit the market, which is unlikely.
