Jacksonville returns to action on Sunday after an emotional home win over the Buffalo Bills last weekend to give the team its first win in front of the home fans in over a calendar year. While the Jaguars’ offense only produced nine points (courtesy of three field goals from Matthew Wright), the defense took a major step forward, holding an explosive Buffalo offense to just six points and no touchdowns.
The team faces another winnable game (in theory) this week on the road against an Indianapolis Colts team that sits at 4-5 on the year but has won three of its last four. This will be the first contest between the division rivals this season, and they split the season series last year as Jacksonville’s Week 1 win over Indianapolis was its only victory all season.
The Colts are getting hot at the right time, and that is largely thanks to the play of the NFL’s second-leading rusher Jonathan Taylor, who is likely to win the rushing title after Derrick Henry suffered a season-ending injury. Quarterback Carson Wentz is also having a very efficient season, and while the Colts defense isn’t exactly elite, it is good against the run and forces a lot of turnovers.
Jacksonville’s pass rush was a major reason for its defensive success last week, but now it faces a Colts offensive line that is among the strongest in football and finally starting to get back to full health.
Pair all of that with the fact that this game comes on the road, and a victory certainly won’t come easy for the Jaguars.
