The Jacksonville Jaguars officially named Urban Meyer their head coach last week. He’s been hard at work since that moment in trying to get a staff together, which will be a key in his tenure in Jacksonville if he is to be successful.
Thanks to many reporters around the nation, we’ve been able to find out who Meyer has reached out to and what spots they could fill. While these moves haven’t been made official and some potential assistants haven’t interviewed yet, here is what info we do know about the Jags’ staffing situation:
Offensive staff
- Scott Linehan is viewed as a top contender for the Jags’ OC job. He will interview early this week, per Ian Rapoport.
Defensive staff
- Houston Texans defensive coordinator and defensive line coach Anthony Weaver will interview with the Jags this week after the team requested permission to talk to him. He formerly served as a graduate assistant under Meyer in 2010 at Florida and could be a candidate to be the Jags defensive line coach.
- Several reporters have confirmed that former Texas defensive coordinator, Chris Ash, is expected to join the Jags’ staff as a position coach. He was a former assistant (defensive coordinator) to Meyer at Ohio State.
- Longtime assistant of Meyer, Charlie Strong, is expected to join his former comrade’s staff. The plan is for him to be Meyer’s assistant head coach, according to Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel while also serving as a linebackers coach.
- Ravens defensive line coach, Joe Cullen, is viewed as a “top target” for the Jags’ defensive coordinator role. However, Albert Breer of the Monday Morning Quarterback suggested that he may be a candidate to be a run game coordinator. Regardless, he could have a big role on the defensive staff and will interview early this week. Cullen spent time with the Jags under Jack Del Rio.
- Meyer will be having dinner with former Falcons interim Raheem Morris Tuesday and will interview him Wednesday for the Jags’ defensive coordinator job. Morris previously was a coordinator for Dan Quinn in Atlanta, who was a former assistant of Meyer.
Other
- Jacksonville native and former Gators linebacker Ryan Stamper will be joining the Jags as a director of player assessment. He was previously Ohio State’s athletic director of player development in 2020, but initially joined the Buckeye’s staff when Meyer was named the coach. While at Florida, he was a team captain for Meyer.
- Texas chief of staff, Fernando Lovo, is expected to join the Jags’ staff. He spent time with Meyer at Florida and Ohio State. He was mostly a football operations assistant with the Gators and was a football operations coordinator in Columbus.
- Meyer’s former strength and conditioning coach at Ohio State and current radio host, Anthony Schlegel, is joining the Jags’ staff. He’ll have the same role he had in Columbus under Meyer.
