The Jacksonville Jaguars now hold the No. 1 overall pick and secure it with two more losses. If that happens and Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence enters the 2021 NFL Draft, it’s a no brainer what the team should do as they look to get the franchise on track.
In CBS Sports’ latest mock by Josh Edwards, the Jags did what most would expect them to do with the No. 1 overall pick and snagged Lawrence.
1. Jacksonville Jaguars – QB Trevor Lawrence, Clemson
Jacksonville sits on the throne for the first time this season. As its first order of business, they select Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence to usher in a new era for the Jaguars.
Of course, this scenario was made possible by the New York Jets after they upset the Los Angeles Rams. As a result, they share the same record with the Jags (1-13), but the league’s tiebreaker rules (decided by the worst strength of schedule) works in the Jags’ favor.
As for Lawrence, words can’t express how huge he’d be for Jacksonville on ad off the field. As a player, he checks off all the boxes (accuracy, experience, athleticism, you name it) and has been placed in the elite prospects category like John Elway, Peyton Manning, and Andrew Luck. The crazy part about his career is that he still can add another notch to his belt before declaring for the draft as Clemson will battle Ohio State for a chance to go to the national championship.
With the Jags’ second first-round pick (from the Los Angeles Rams), they addressed another huge need with another player who has been in big-time games. That player was Alabama defensive tackle Christian Barmore.
22. Jacksonville Jaguars – DT Christian Barmore, Alabama
Jacksonville has a couple of talented pass rushers in Josh Allen and K’Lavon Chaisson. If the Jaguars can add a capable interior defensive lineman, then they will have at least one unit on the roster settled for years to come.
As explained above, the Jags have potential on the outside of their defensive line and need to focus more on interior linemen this offseason. They have players like DaVon Hamilton and Doug Costin who’ve shown up, but it feels like one more starter is needed. Barmore would be the perfect addition as he’s a versatile lineman who can play at various spots on the defensive line.
This would be a huge haul for the Jags if they could make it happen. The quarterback position and interior defensive line are two areas where the Jags clearly have needed help at during the season.
That said, we’d like to hear from the Jags fans at home. Would you all be fine with these two picks, or is there another pairing that would’ve been better?
